My string quartet is in two short movements. The first is a fugue at the tritone, which modulates to tonality and back. The second movement uses the subject of the fugue, reworking it into a lively scherzo. The second movement theme’s complex rhythm is based on the Bransle Gay movement in Stravinsky’s Agon, which uses polymeter. Technicalities aside, my quartet’s use of the tritone with the perfect fifth along with the difference in tempo between movements creates a contrast of darkness and light, the central premiseof the quartet.
